Walter Jacobs


Walter is a co-founder of Fractal Value Advisors.

He has extensive experience in company analysis and valuation, both from an internal company perspective as well as from the external financial markets perspective.

In a 5-year period at PPC and Barloworld from 1997 to 2002, Walter was involved in various strategic projects that included cost optimisation and plant replacement studies. He was a member of Barloworld's strategy evaluation team which reported to the board of directors on group and divisional performance through a value-based framework. He also worked closely with stakeholders in developing a strategic planning process that assisted the CEO with performance measurement, target setting, valuations, and capital allocation decisions.

During the last 14 years Walter was at Credit Suisse where he worked with some of South Africa’s leading fund managers, helping them understand the operational performance and valuation of listed and unlisted companies. He has constructed financial models for the valuation of companies in preparation for IPOs, and management & leveraged buy-outs. He also reviewed investment portfolios to help clients better understand their risk and factor exposures.

Walter has been a guest lecturer at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, and taught in-house valuation courses for Credit Suisse clients. He qualified as a Charted Accountant after completing his articles with KPMG in 1991. Walter graduated from the University of Johannesburg in 1990 with a BCom (Honours) in Accounting, Auditing and Taxation.
